Delco seeks applicants for Jail Oversight Board vacancy

Delaware County residents who want to ensure that the George W. Hill Correctional Facility is running smoothly currently have an opportunity to do just that.

The county is trying to fill an opening on its Jail Oversight Board, which helps ensure that living conditions at the county jail and its alternative housing facilities are safe and compliant with applicable laws.

To do so, the board conducts unannounced inspections twice per year, during which inmates are interviewed to assess conditions and identify issues. The oversight board also investigates concerns related to inadequate conditions or improper practices at the county jail, and it holds regular meetings and offers public reporting.

Delaware County Council established the Jail Oversight Board in 2019, replacing the former County Board of Prison Inspectors. The county took over control of the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in 2022 following years of allegations of mistreatment toward both incarcerated people and staff under the ownership of a for-profit operator, GEO Group.

Those interested in joining the Jail Oversight Board can apply at delcopa.gov/clerk/board-vacancies. The deadline to apply is Jan. 30, and the position is a three-year term.
