First responders come together to rescue hiker in Scott Park marsh
Thanks to the teamwork of multiple local fire companies, first responders were able to rescue an injured hiker from marshy terrain on March 8 at Louis W. Scott Memorial Park.
According to the Rose Tree Fire Company, crews were dispatched to an area near Ridley Creek at Scott Park to help the hiker, who was unable to walk out without aid. “After evaluating the terrain and exit path, it quickly became clear that additional resources would be needed to safely bring the patient out,” the fire company said.
Enter the Middletown Fire Company and the Rocky Run Fire Company, which arrived with more personnel and specialized equipment to help navigate the marsh — including two all-terrain vehicles. The Upper Providence Police Department was also on scene to provide logistical support and personnel.
Rescue crews worked together to secure the hiker in a rescue basket, and after a “slow and methodical” trek out of the marshy terrain, they brought the patient to a waiting ambulance to receive further care.
“Incidents like this highlight the importance of training, teamwork and strong mutual aid partnerships,” the Rose Tree Media Fire Company said in a social media post.
