Delco Rugby hosts informative AYCE pancake breakfast

It isn’t quite American football. It isn’t soccer either. It’s rugby. Since the mid-19th century, it is a sport that’s incredibly popular in Europe and South America. But it is only recently that the sport has begun to grow locally.

If you’re curious about the H-shaped goal posts, the 15-player teams, or the strange oval-shaped ball, one Delco organization has your back. The Delaware County Rugby Football CIUD will be hosting a fundraising and recruiting event on Saturday, Feb. 21.

While players typically run a rectangular field or “pitch” with a ball in hand, they’ll swap their sport for pancakes instead during the weekend event slated to run from 9 to 11 a.m. The event is designed for players from ages 10 through high school to learn more about the sport all while enjoying All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast.

The breakfast will also have Ireland vs. England’s rugby game on television screens. Since 1978, Media Rugby is a nonprofit organization that helps to promote the sport in the area. The informative breakfast will be held at the Media VFW, 11 Hilltop Road in Media.

Potential players do not need to have any experience, and all genders are welcome to play.

“Bring your appetite,” said a social media post promoting the event. “Bring a friend. Bring your future rugby player.”

Registration for Delco Rugby can be done online here.
