Marsh, Schwarber and Turner all homer as Phillies defeat Rangers
Brandon Marsh, Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber all homered Friday in a 9-1 series-opening victory for the Phillies over the Texas Rangers.
Schwarber got the Phillies on the board in the top of the first inning, turning a Merrill Kelly offering around at 115.4 mph and hitting a solo shot off the right-field foul pole:

It was Schwarber’s NL-leading 41st home run of the season, putting him six away from his career-high of 47, which he hit in 2023. Schwarber is also only one home run behind Seattle Mariners’ catcher Cal Raleigh, who has 42 homers, for the MLB lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Phillies added three more runs, the first of which came on Brandon Marsh’s seventh home run of the season:

Marsh entered the evening with a .912 OPS since the All-Star Break, and continued his recent hot streak with four hits Friday. He finished the elusive triple shy of the cycle.
Trea Turner would drive in the other two runs in the fourth inning on a double into the left-field corner:

Before the night was out, Turner drove in three more runs on a ninth-inning home run that put the game on ice, his first home run since June 27:

Cristopher Sánchez wasn’t at his sharpest in the series-opener, but the NL Cy Young contender still managed to keep the Rangers off the board after he gave up a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sánchez allowed six hits and just the one run over six innings, while striking out six. His ERA on the season is now down to 2.36, and FanGraphs says that his 4.1 WAR trails only Tarik Skubal, Paul Skenes and Garrett Crochet among qualified starters.
With the win, the Phillies improve to 66-49, increasing their NL East lead to 3 1/2 games over the New York Mets. Meanwhile, the Rangers drop to 60-57.
The two teams will continue their three-game weekend set Saturday evening on FOX, with Jesús Luzardo set to square off with two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom.
