Time to lace up those sneakers and support America’s heroes

With the weather warming, it is the season for walkers, runners, and outdoor enjoyers from all walks of life. In fact, it is also time to register for the first ever Masonic Mile that will be held May 3.

“We are hoping to welcome between 200 and 300 participants as we launch what we intend to become an annual community tradition,” said Steve Bush, one of the organizers.

The Masonic Mile is a Delaware County community event that supports Help for Our Heroes, raising money for veterans and their families.

“The event supports the Pennsylvania Masonic Charity Foundation’s Help for Our Heroes Fund, which has been active for over a dozen years and has raised more than $1.5 million to assist active-duty military families and veterans across Pennsylvania who are facing unexpected financial hardship,” said Bush.

“In addition to general emergency support, the fund also provides assistance to military families welcoming newborns and infants — helping during a child’s first two years of life with financial support, baby shower–style gifts, and essential items to ease the burden during deployment or transition,” he said.

There are two youth-only running events and two events for walkers and runners of all ages.

An additional “Mommy, Daddy & Me” family registration is also an offered option. The children’s events are $15, the adult events are $25, and the family walk is $50.

All are welcome to attend. Posts about the Mile state that you need not worry if “you’re not the greatest athlete or a serious runner.” It’s a “relaxed and welcoming event,” according to its organizers.

“Many of the participants walk,” said a social media post by its organizers. “And some just come out to support it. It’s an opportunity to bring people together to help and honor those who have served our country and our communities”

“Even in this inaugural year, we have already raised close to $10,000 through sponsorships and early registrations, and momentum continues to build,” said Bush.

“The Masonic Mile is designed to be a true community event, with participation opportunities for all ages — including family registrations and activities for children — so everyone can come together in support of those who serve,”  he said.

Residents from MiddletownMedia, Lima, and the surrounding areas are invited to take part in the event. Registration is open now online. The event is slated to take place at the Sun Valley High School stadium, located at 2881 Pancoast Avenue, in Aston.
